Well, Iceman... if you had 2 (TWO!) strawberries today, you have doubled your fruit intake!!! Kudos! Because if memory serves, you usually only have 1.

I often test trace also and my UA's have also come back okay. The BUN and Creatinine was normal but near the borderline. My doc said not to worry much but it's something to continue to monitor. I do have occasional bouts of left posterior flank pain (kidney) now and then. Every few months it'll ache for several days, then disappear.

Went to the clinic this morning and dipped a stik...no leukocytes, bare trace of protein and mild ketosis.

The health aid said they see a lot of mild protein dips and don't get to excited unless the level is higher. Possibly an indication of the substistence diet still practiced by many.

So I'm just gonna keep tweekin' the food...less protein, more carbs and see where it takes me. I had 2 strawberries for breakfast today... http://boards.dietwatch.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For the time being I'm going to cut back on protein, increase the carbs a tad and go back for another dipstick next Monday. If the protein would have been more than a trace I'd be a little more concerned. The test was taken in the morning after drinking a couple of cups of coffee and before any water intake for the day.

The leukocytes are worrisome and I'm going back in the morning for the urine analysis. But I don't have any lower back pain, no constant need to pee, no burning, etc. So maybe something else is infected besides my bladder.

I will be sure to have the kidney function test done in March when I do my next scheduled labs.

I'm gonna stick with this for at least awhile longer. For the first time since I was diagnosed I feel like I'm in control of the disease and my blood sugars and I won't give that up without a fight.

We always have the coconut shrimp appetizer when we eat at Outback in Anch.

Well, what do you plan to do for now? What's your own opinion of your dietician's comments?

You already know that I have some concerns and worry about the low carb, high protein --- but I want to be supportive to your choices.

Did they do a BUN and Creatinine Level to check the function of the kidneys for you recently? If not, you might want ask if you can add those to your next lab draws.

As for the leukocytes - those are white blood cells and usually indicative of infection. No red blood cells present???? Any burning while urinating? Did she suggest a complete urinalysis?

As for the shrimp, I probably only eat them once or twice a week. I would enjoy them more if they were coconut breaded and dipped in plum sauce!!!! LOL. Yeah.... moderation is always the key factor.

Young Fisher, my dietician replied to my weekly email to the Anchorage health care team.

This is what she had to say about shrimp.

Hi Dave,

Good to hear you're doing well. You are doing great! Shrimps to have about 155gm of sterol which is a type of cholesterol per 3 ounce serving. There is some conflict in research about shrimp consumption and human cholesterol. Some research states, it goes up and some research states it doesn't. Bottom line, my advise is eat them in moderation or monitor your cholesterol levels and see what happens. They are an excellent source of protein and minimal fat of any kind http://boards.dietwatch.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Then I was at the clinic this morning and dunked a peestik just for giggles and it read a trace of leukocytes, trace of protein and moderate ketones. I asked her about the results and she replied:

trace of protein may not be a huge deal, but it is an indication that your kidneys are working hard and not able to reabsorb all the protein back. Also having some ketones in your urine for a short time is alright, but ketones all the time is not good. Ketones are waste products of fat metabolism and can be toxic in large amounts. Its a toxin. I would caution you to pay attention to how much protein you are consuming. Remember protein intake still causes work in your body. It may not raise your blood sugar, but it still causes much work load to the kidneys and liver. Balance, balance of everything http://boards.dietwatch.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Its not an easy answer. Who said eating healthy in this day and age was easy! If you want to introduce carbs slowly, always choose, high fiber carbs!!! Such as vegetables, Whole wheat bread (Orowheat light has only 11grams of carbs per 2 slices! I'm not talking about their "carb counting" bread. Just their "light" bread), Fiber one cereal (7 - 11 grams of carbs). I've lost almost 10# over three weeks from exercising regularly and eating high fiber, lower fat and moderate protein and moderate carb. We are not the same, but my point is that its about activity and calorie consumption. For you, you do need to pay attention to carb quantity, but I think you should be able to still have some high fiber carbs. Give a little more time then maybe consider introducing high fiber carbs back into your diet. Remember, as you increase your lean mass and decrease your fat tissue mass, your insulin resistance will decrease and your body will be able to process carbs easier. Our bodies deserve all variety of foods to get the nutrients. Hang in there.
