Several new studies suggest that a lack of sleep may make weight loss and weight control more of a challenge by altering metabolism, eating behavior and activity patterns.

Although effects of sleep deprivation on hormone production and metabolism are still under investigation, the behaviors affected are better understood.

Among other patterns, individuals who lack sleep tend to consume more calories in attempt to increase energy levels and may be less likely to exercise or do so less vigorously, due to waning energy. Sleep experts recommend at least eight hours of sleep a night for most adults.
