When a flower on a plant is pollinated, the petals eventually fall off, and the female part of the flower that remains on the plant gets bigger and bigger (for weeks or sometimes years)...and this is what we call a fruit. So, generally speaking, fruits grow on plants where the flowers used to be. Therefore, certain foods that people often call vegetables (like cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, squash, and tomatoes) are actually fruits.
