These kinds of things are scary. Both my mother and my sister have had big problems with identity theft kinds of things. As a precaution, I've recently subscribed to the Identity Fraud Alert service at myfico.com (which is the "official" agency that lenders go through)....they consolidate the checking with the credit companies etc. for you for $7.50 a month--you get a quarterly credit score report plus weekly monitoring of attempts to make any changes/inquiries on your account. I find it worth the peace of mind.

LOng story so I won't get into it but Dh and I had a telephone fraud incident with AT and T or someone claiming to be AT and T....and we were quite angry...dh reported it to MInnesota business bureau (not official name, can't remember real name) and they might investigate if there are more complaints.....
be careful with AT&T is all I have to say!

yes!! that's EXACTLY what i thought tonight too - that someone had already got a card in my name, and oh no!, they'd stolen my numbers from somewhere. so i called to ask Wells Fargo about it, and she told me to relax, and not to fill out the form, that it was a scam sent out today.
whew!
i'm still writing the credit companies and checking my credit, just to be on the safe side though...

I got the same type of letter about 6 months ago from what had Wachovia on it, asking me to confirm my credit card information and social security number so they could make sure someone ELSE hadn't stolen my information. In fact, I called Wachovia very concerned, and they told me also that it was a scam. It is very terrifying. I thought someone already HAD my identity and GOT a card in my name, that's the way it sounded. BEWARE!!!!!!

wanted to share, just in case you ever get one of these.
i got a very official looking email from Wells Fargo Bank, as if i were a customer of theirs. it asked for my social security number, and other personal information. there was a link that said if i wasn't enrolled in their online program, i could do so, and give them all my personal information.
i cannot tell you how official this looked. truly like the real thing. but it made me freak out cuz i don't have an account with them, nor have i ever had an account with them. and it didn't have my email address that they sent it to, just my name.
so i called wells fargo. and the banker there told me not to fill anything out, and not to even open up the email, because it was a FRAUD!!!
they were sent out today, and the bank got an alert on them this morning. the bank did not send them, nor do they know anything about them. it is spam. except, they are collecting personal information about people, so that they can then go wild with your personal info - and set up accounts, etc.
scary stuff!!!
the banker told me that this is the latest email scam, and that no bank, ever, would ask for this kind of information from you, even if you were their customer. and that they are now sending these fraudulent spam emails not just from wells fargo, but from a bunch of differnet banks, hoping that you'll have a credit card with one, or that they'll hit your bank name with one.
just fyi. pass this on. this really happened to me today, this is not hearsay. and it's really scary. i'm still going to write the credit reporting agencies and ask for my credit report, just to be on the safe side!!
